After being named section and WPIAL Champions last year, the Seneca Valley boys lacrosse is back again.
Monday, March 4, marked the start of the teams 2013 season with try-outs, that continued through Friday, March 8. The boys wishing to make a team will be separated into three teams this year; Varsity(9-12), Junior Varsity(9-11), and a third team that will consist of players in both 9 and 10 grade.
The first cuts for Varsity were made on that Tuesday night, March 6. That list consisted of the boys the coaches wanted to invite to keep trying out for their varsity team. The rest of the boys who did not get asked to stay and try for varsity continued try-outs to find out weather they would be on the Junior Varsity team or the third team.
The official team roster for varsity has a total of 31 people, 2 freshmen, 7 sophomores, 10 juniors, and 12 seniors this year with coaches Lance Diamond, Chad Melberg, and Rob Marasti.
Seniors Cole Fyock and Wendell Frank both stated that, “We have the potential to be very good.” There are some thing that will make for big change this season, though.
The team itself lost a total of 10 seniors; one being an all section, all American, and leading scorer Dave Hall and another being their main goalie and WPIAL All-Star Jake Succop.
Wendell and Cole said that their last year’s back-up goalie and senior this year, Jordan Culichia, will be stepping in as their main goalie this year. Wendell commented on this saying, “Jordan is very nervous because it is his first year as starting goalie.”
Unfortunately, on Friday March 8, word that Culichia is now going to be out for the first month or so with a broken collar bone was released. Now, Sophomore Paul Cundiff will be filling in until Culichia recovers.
Fyock and Frank both spoke for the team by stating they hope for a “repeat of last year” and are out for “another WPIAL Championship.” Frank went on to say that their biggest worry is “the underclassmen not being able to step up.”
The team’s first scrimmage will be on March 16 at Upper Arlington and first game will be on March 22 at Ephrata.
