Valentine’s Day: Stepping Outside ‘The Dinner Date’

Melissa John, Staff Writer

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, the same troubles barricade our minds from year to year. What if I spend too much? What if I don’t do enough? What if I don’t even have a Valentine this year? Well, rest easy! With these tips, you can manage to get through yet another Valentine’s Day with less stress, more money, and an all around happier holiday.

Valentine’s Day is all about love, right? So, why not show your significant other just that? Do something for them that will be more personable than spending a hundred dollars on a pair of shoes. Try making them a scrapbook full of all of the fun times you have had together, or even cooking your own dinner followed by an indoor picnic near your fireplace. This simple, yet cute, way of showing you care will mean much more to someone than labels and designer brands.

Don’t have the time to get that crafty? Why not give them the gift that keeps on giving? Grab a bag and fill it to the brim with things that your boyfriend/girlfriend loves! These items could be as simple as a jar of their favorite kind of peanut butter to a complete collection of their favorite series of books. The two of you will have fun reminiscing memories that each item may bring, and your wallet doesn’t have to be completely empty when all is said and done- making this idea a win-win decision!

Have a little extra cash to spend this year? Why not ditch the expensive dinner idea (Who wants to settle for paying a couple hundred dollars on a mediocre dinner, anyway?) and buy your boyfriend/girlfriend tickets to their favorite sporting event or even concert? This is something cute you two can look forward to, and also gives you something you can do together.

Don’t have a Valentine this year? Don’t stress! Valentine’s Day, while centered around couples, brings forth many opportunities for single people as well. For example, the best chocolates are displayed around this time of year, and I can promise you there is no shame in going out and buying yourself the biggest selection there is. You deserve it! Take the day off, sit back, and relax. Fill yourself a bubble bath, light some candles, and soak up your own awesomeness. (And watch all of your friends’ wallets go into negative balances while you rest easy knowing yours hasn’t!) Happy Single’s Awareness Day!
