AFCON 2013 Gets Underway

The 2013 African Cup of Nations, sometimes referred to as “AFCON” is underway in South Africa.  It is a soccer tournament that takes place in an African country every odd numbered year.  It is a competition between the best soccer nations in Africa.  The winning nation of this tournament will get to play in the Confederations Cup.

This tournament which will conclude in the middle of February is about to start the knockout phase.  There are 8 remaining nations, with the favorites Ghana, Nigeria, and the Ivory Coast still very much alive.   Some of the world’s best footballers are participating, including Former Chelsea Icon, and Soccer hero, Didier Drogba, he is representing his home country of Côte d’Ivoire.  As well as the star young Ghanaian attacker, Kevin Prince Boateng, who plays his club football at AC Milan in the Italian league.

This is a great tournament for all of Africa, as it is something that brings these nations together, and also gives them something to get excited about.  This is one of the most popular soccer tournaments in the world and is something that all soccer fans can appreciate.
