Welcome to Opening the Jar! Now I know the title must be a little confusing so let me explain. My nickname is Jar… weird right? My friends dad tried to think of a nickname for me. I was called many names before Jar. One of them was Jamar, that was then shorten to Jar and it stuck. Anyway, this is the first day of the new column, which will be my thoughts.
The first topic is relationships, oh boy! From my experience and from friends, high school seniors struggle with relationships because college is just around the corner. I’m here to tell you this:
STOP LETTING COLLEGE GET IN THE WAY!
Sure it makes sense to avoid relationships senior year to steer clear of the heart break at the end of the year. Although, most people, for some weird reason, can’t understand that you do not HAVE to breakup. Yes, if you do not go to the same school as your significant other or if you are far away it will be hard, but you will make it work.
If you truly love the person and are committed to the relationship it will work. You definitely will not see them as much, but you’ll live! In today’s world we have texting, calling, FaceTime, Snap Chat and more. Stop making excuses for why you can’t be in a relationship senior year.
Relationships are not for everyone, and that is OK! It is better to figure out what you want in high school though. It will help to make college a more enjoyable experience.
If you think you are the type of person that would not want a relationship in college, that’s totally normal. The reasons for that can vary. A common reason is trying to figure out who you are. That is a big part of college and sometimes, not always, relationships can hold you back from figuring yourself out.
Relationships can be a real pain, but always remember communication is key to making it work!
