“Mississippi gets a lot of bad press about this type of stuff and I just felt that it is something that should be fixed, and I saw every reason that could be done,” he said. “Everyone here would like to put this part of Mississippi’s past behind us and move on into the 21st century rather than the 19th.”
Slavery was officially abolished in the state of Mississippi this past month. It was abolished in 1895, but was never archived and because of that, it had never been made legitimate. This was brought to the attention of two Mississippi Medical colleagues and they took it upon themselves to get this amendment ratified.
This is just one of the many weird laws that we have in our country that have never been abolished but also are not enforced. For instance, if you are in Alabama, I wouldn’t suggest starting a Bear Wrestling league because that is punishable by death. Also if you have to take a trip to South Dakota and visit a cheese factory, be sure not to fall asleep because that is against the law.
In Pittsburgh it is illegal to sleep on top of a refrigerator, and it is contrary to Pennsylvania law to discharge a gun, cannon, revolver or other explosive weapon at a wedding.
Be careful next time you do something in public because it just might be illegal.
